I have wanted to do a humor column about the Eighties for a long time now, especially since all of my formative teen years were spent in that crazy decade. There is so much to make fun of so I’m starting this occasional feature off with some randomness.
How to do the Thriller
I have a hunch that this video series on dance moves is a recent parody but who cares. Dancing Kim is pretty representative of the girls I went to high school with. A few Bartles and James wine coolers and you were good to go my friend. Keep the leg warmers on honey.
George Costanza on Anxiety Medication
Jason Alexander doing a McDLT commercial. And singing. He’s almost creepy. I take that back, he is creepy. I like him better as neurotic George but that requires different prescriptions. Luckily, his career lasted about 1,000 times longer then the sandwich.
Dirty Gum
I can’t believe I found this extremely popular 80’s Juicy Fruit commercial because I remember making fun of the lyrics back in the day…
“Take a sniff, pull it out, the taste is going to move you when you pop it in your mouth.”
Of course there is a hot blond ‘popping’ a piece in her mouth at the right moment. You are welcome by the way for putting that jingle into your head for the next week or so. And no, that wasn’t David Hasselhoff in the commercial.
Alright maybe today’s reality shows aren’t so bad
Yes folks, that clip is from Dance Fever, one of the earlier reality shows with Deney Terrio who was later replaced by Adrian Zmed. It must suck to lose your job to the sidekick from T.J. Hooker. The audio and video isn’t the best, sorry.
This one is hit or miss…
Getting a little liberal, no double entendre intended, with Barbapapa as it was made in the 70’s but not released in the U.S. until the 80’s. The audio needs to be turned up on this one as well.
I picked that particular clip because it shows the beginning of the enviro-nut movement. Humans are evil and scare animals into extinction.

and its funny that a lot of the 80s stuff is coming back - I’ve still been waiting to catch a snap shot of someone in legwarmers these days though - They’re around, they prowl, much like in the Thriller video, whoa…

I remember the Barbapa series. Fictitious non-human liberal blobs, capable of saving nature from its natural progression, with progressivism. Yeah. Right.
