A Serious Memorial Day Post: Thank You

Written by Chris C on May 26th, 2008

Yes, I know this is a humor blog. But for the first time I would like to talk about something serious: honoring the people who serve in the military.

I would like to say thank you to every person who has served in the US Military on this Memorial Day. Without your bravery we would not be free. Even with a draft in WWII you felt compelled to fight, not feeling at all like you were forced to do so. You fought in Vietnam despite being hated at home for all the wrong reasons and later your younger brethren helped heal those wounds with a successful first Iraq war.

Right now, hundreds of thousands of you are overseas fighting for a cause many here in the United States do not believe in, for good reason of course. But you volunteered to fight the fight none the less.

You left your home, your families, and your children born without you being there because you chose to fight for all of us. But yet the rest of us live our daily lives like there isn’t a war going on. It isn’t like it was in World War II with rationing and salvaging metals for the cause. Our burning issue each day is where will go for lunch. Yours is whether you will be alive to be able to eat lunch.

Yet we treat you like your sacrifice doesn’t matter. Just war or not, it matters. You matter and we must never forget this.

So this post is for all you people in the military, past and present. You are the real American heroes and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say thank you for the sacrifices you made.

Day is done,
gone the sun,
from the lakes
from the hills
from the sky,
all is well,
safely, rest,
God is near.

Fading light,
Dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky
Gleaming bright,
From afar,
Drawing, near,
Falls the night.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
Neath the sun
Neath the stars
Neath the sky,
As we go,
This, we, know,
God is near.

If Liberty means anything to me,
I will remember what my freedom cost,
By those who gave their all to keep me free,
Whose lives were sacrificed, but never lost.
I will remind myself of what they did,
    And keep them dearly cherished in my heart;
Their honor never from me shall be hid
And I will know they always did their part
To save our nation and its people here,
To pledge their lives in defense of our ways,
To show that freedom always outlives fear,
And sacrifice is hallowed all our days.
If Liberty means anything to me,
I will remember those who kept me free.

I wanted to add that I spent a lot of time making sure I worded everything right. The last thing I want to do is write something that can be taken as negative or disrespectful towards our troops. If anyone notices anywhere I did this, please let me know so I can edit it.

Nice addition to the post Stushie. That pastor’s speech was moving.

You are confused with the meaning of this holiday.

Memorial Day is a day to remember all who gave their lives for this great country.

Veteran’s Day is a tribute to the living.

    Bunk,

Yes I definitely agree with you in the sense of tradition of the day. After I wrote and posted it I had that same thought: Memorial Day is for honoring the fallen soldiers.

I hope I wasn’t being disrespectful by putting the attention on all the military not just the fallen heroes. If I was I apologize.

Thanks for stopping by with your comments and for your service to our fine country.

I wasn’t offended; no apology needed. Obama made the same error without apology, and he should know better. Too many folks are ignorant of this country’s history.
    Cordially,
    Bunk

If only Obama had the integrity that I have :)
